James Calvert Obituary

James A. Calvert, age 89, of Hollidaysburg, died Tuesday evening, October 6, 2020, at his residence. He was born April 26, 1931 in Altoona, a son of the late W. Clair and Aletta S. (Liebegott) Calvert.

He is survived by four children: James D. (wife Francene) of Altoona, Mark W. (fiancé Mary Jo Hughes) of Tyrone, Jennifer A. Kimble of Altoona, and Lori J. Calvert (fiancé Michael Condo) of Hagerstown, MD; grandchildren: Jeremy, Nicholas, Benjamin and Christian Calvert, Abbey, Brian, and Laura Gunter, Aaron and Sara Riley, Lauren Claycomb, and Ross and Emily Campbell; great-grandchildren: Hunter, Dakota, Liesel, Alivia, Brooks, Tonie, Ryker, Roderick, Addison, Greyson, Hallie, and one on the way. Jim is also survived by his fiancé, Doris Holland; his former wives: Emma Jean Lovell, whom is the mother of his children, and Judy Calvert; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, William C. Calvert; two sisters: Barbara O’Shell and Margaret J. Mervine; and a son-in-law, Joseph Kimble.

James was a 1949 graduate of Hollidaysburg High School and a graduate of American College of Life Underwriters. He was a US Air Force veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict. He was the district representative for Lutheran Brotherhood for 37 years, retiring in 2002.

Mr. Calvert was a past president of Altoona Association of Life Underwriters, past president of Western PA Chapter Society of Charter Life Underwriters / Charter Financial Consultants, past president of Blair County Estate Planning Council, past president of Rotary Club in Hollidaysburg, past president of Hollidaysburg Chamber of Commerce, a 60+ year member of Portage Lodge #220 F&AM, a member of: Altoona Shrine Club, the Jaffa Legion of Honor, the Tall Cedars, and Scottish Rite, a life member of Duncansville Volunteer Fire Department, a life member of the Single Action Shooting Society, member of American Legion Post #516, Hollidaysburg, a member of Blair County Genealogy Society, and a member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Martinsburg.

Jim enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, boating, collecting John Wayne memorabilia and bald eagle collectibles, Civil War history, working in his rose garden, going on car rides with Doris to get ice cream, and spending time with family. He was known for always whistling a tune everywhere he went.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8pm on Fri., Oct. 9, 2020 and on Sat., Oct. 10 from 10am until the 11am funeral service, officiated by Rev. Ralph Hamer, at Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., Duncansville. Committal service to follow, with military honors, accorded by Blair County Veterans Honor Guard. Interment will take place at Carson Valley Cemetery.
