James Filegar Obituary

James E. “Gus” Filegar, age 70, of Duncansville, has bowled his last frame and joined the big leagues in the sky. He passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, January 26, 202, surrounded by his loving family. He was born March 14, 1953 in Union City, son of the late Kenneth O. and Ruth E. (Hadlock) Filegar.

Surviving is his wife, Cynthia (Willis) Filegar of Duncansville; a son, Michael (Sarah) Filegar of Ashville; two daughters: Jessica (Jordan) Deshong of Altoona and Hayley (Brian) Filegar of Durham, NC; two step-daughters: Naomi Pelc of Atlantic and Holly (Greg) Luce of Conneautville; a brother, Don (Lillian) Filegar of Windsor, CO; three nieces; two nephews; 8 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and his beloved yorkie-poo, Hollidawg.

He was preceded in death by a son, Jamie Filegar; a brother, Kenneth Ray Filegar; and a step-son, Jeremy Bundy.

James attended Cambridge Springs High School. He was a man of many talents. He worked at Millennium Rail, formerly Watco, for 26 years as an industrial painter, specializing in railcar repair. In 2017, he swapped his painter’s coveralls for a bowling ball and started working at Holiday Bowl in the pro-shop. There he drilled bowling balls and connected with fellow bowlers and customers.

In his spare time, James had a passion for history, specifically the Civil War. He was a Civil War re-enactor and was also a published author, having written and published a realistic fiction novel, Fathers, Sons, and Brothers, in 2003. He enjoyed yearly camping trips with his wife and children in Gettysburg, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. His lifetime love for bowling never ceased.

James was a man who knew how to spare a moment for those he loved, and he will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and all those who knew him.

Friends will be received from 10am until the noon memorial service on Wednesday, January 31, 2024 at The Well Ministry Center, 605 Burns Ave., Altoona, PA 16601. Pastor John Godissart will officiate.
