Shirley L (Berkey) Diehl

Shirley L. Diehl, age 92, of Duncansville, peacefully went with the Lord on Sunday morning, May 9, 2021. She was born July 15, 1928 in Newry, daughter of the late Quentin E. and Grace M. (Weaver) Berkey. She married Fred T. Diehl on Oct. 5, 1944.

Surviving are her two sons: Barry Diehl (wife Linda) of Martinsburg and Jeff Diehl of Duncansville; 7 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Fred T. Diehl; three siblings: Donald G. Berkey, Dennis B. Berkey, and infant brother, Gary Berkey; and a daughter-in-law, Cathy Diehl.

Shirley graduated from Penn State University in 1973 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. She accepted her first teaching position at Gaysport Elementary teaching 2nd grade and taught for 16 years before retiring. She earned her Master’s degree taking night courses twice a week while teaching full-time and taking care of her family.

She was a member of St. Patrick Church. Shirley enjoyed writing and reading mysteries, painting, and the tranquility of her farm.

Friends will be received from 5-8pm on Wed., May 12, 2021 at Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., Duncansville. A funeral Mass will be held at 1pm on Thurs., May 13 at St. Patrick Church, Newry, Father Allen Zeth, celebrant. Interment will take place at Newry Lutheran Cemetery.
