Thelma Kathryn (Mosser) Hazenstab, departed this life of 88 years on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, after a brief illness, to join her beloved husband in Heaven.
Thelma was the oldest daughter of the late Ernest “Red” and Mildred (Price) Mosser. She was born May 3, 1936 in Altoona and she grew up in Claysburg with her parents, alongside her younger sister, Beverly. They have all preceded her in death, as well as an infant brother, Richard.
She was introduced to the love of her life, Robert V. Hazenstab, while she was in high school. She watched him go off into the service and upon his return, they were married October 5, 1957. He passed on August 11, 2022.
Thelma and Bob raised a family of four children in Duncansville: Elizabeth McCabe (Paul), Robert E. (Michelle), Richard (Wendy), and Deborah Blackburn (Geoffrey); grandchildren who love their grandma dearly: Sue Ann McCabe, Robert V. Hazenstab II, Erin Bard (Jordan), Adam Hazenstab (Alyssa), Geoffrey Blackburn Jr. (Staci), Sarah Johnson (Erik), and Molly Kovalcik (Billy); 14 great-grandchildren ages 24 - 1 year old; and one great-great grandson. Thelma is survived by a brother-in-law, Robert Peck from North Carolina; many nieces and nephews; and a life-long friend, Janet Wray. Twin grandsons and a great granddaughter wait for her in Heaven.
Thelma graduated from Claysburg Kimmel High School in 1954 where she was a member of the marching band, beginning as a clarinetist and then learned the trombone. She had many fond memories of her years growing up in Coney Island, attending events at Musselman’s Grove or walking to the Claysburg Theatre for the latest movies.
Thelma began working after graduation. Her first job was as a clerk at the Blair County Courthouse. When her children were born, she took on the full-time (and sometimes a hand-full) job of raising the children. When Debbie, the youngest was school-aged, Thelma started a part-time job at Sears and Roebuck in Altoona. In 1978, Bob and Thelma acquired their own business, R. Hazenstab Construction, where Thelma was the bookkeeper until their retirement. They were also the proprietors of a baby clothing shop, Mom’s Bundle Teek.
Thelma, along with her husband and children were founding members of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church of Duncansville. Thelma spent countless hours in the kitchen preparing and serving meals to parish members. She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters and a Eucharist Minister.
