Thomas Smith Obituary

Thomas E Smith, age 83, of Duncansville, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 6, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was born June 20, 1942 in Akron, Ohio, the eldest son of Edward and Agnes (Bender) Smith.

Tom studied mechanical engineering at Barberton Tech and Akron University.  He spent his lifelong career in engineering with a focus on measurement and flow in the water and gas industry.  He worked for over 40 years with Rockwell International / Sensus Technologies, where he was known for his leadership, problem-solving, and commitment to continuous improvement.

Tom is survived by his wife of 62 years, Anna Mae (Shonk); his children, Timothy (April) Smith and Theresa (Rob) Richards; and his grandchildren Madelynn “Maddie” Smith, Christopher Richards and Matthew Richards.  Tom was the eldest of nine siblings: Beverly “Bev” Haught, Jerome “Jerry” Smith, Elizabeth “Betty” Paulus, Robert “Bob” Smith, Joseph “Joe” Smith, Mary Poston, and Rebecca “Becky” Ward.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Paul Thomas Smith, and a sister, Barbara “Barb” Smith.

Tom will be remembered for his deep faith and dedication to our Lord and Savior. He served in many roles within the church over the years.  He played a key part in the building of St. Joan of Arc in Farmington, PA, and later served as lector and Eucharistic minister at St Catherine of Siena in Duncansville, PA.   Tom had a gift for caring for others, always ensuring their needs were met before his own and cared for his family in every circumstance. His smile and warm sense of humor could brighten any room.  Tom’s knowledge of all systems and how to break things down made him a natural problem solver.  He also loved gardening and tending to his farm animals.

Friends will be received from 4-7pm on Monday, November 10, 2025 at Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., Duncansville.  A Funeral Mass will be Celebrated at 11am on Tuesday, November 11, 2025 at St Catherine Church, Duncansville, followed by a luncheon in the fellowship hall. Father Jeremy Mohler will be Celebrant. Friends will be received for one hour prior to the Mass at the church. Private interment will be at St. Mary Cemetery, Hollidaysburg.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Hollidaysburg Veterans’ Home (138 Veterans Blvd., Duncansville, PA 16635), a place where Tom volunteered in the canteen for many years, sharing his care and smile, and where he mentored his grandsons to honor those that fought and defended our freedom.
