Obituary

William R. Hinton, age 80, of Hollidaysburg, died Wednesday evening, June 28, 2023 at his home, following an extended illness. He was born October 17, 1942 in Altoona, and raised in Martinsburg, son of the late William L. and Emma Jane (Sleighter) Hinton. He married Marcia M. Piper on June 10, 1967 at Broad Ave. Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are his wife, Marcia; two daughters: Autumn Strauss (Steven) of Chatham, NJ, and Amber Gordon (Terry) of Derry; four grandchildren: Mason Strauss and Reagan, Delaney, and Bailey Gordon; a sister, Sandi Hinton of Wilmington, NC; two nephews: Sean Creedon and Matthew Piper; and special cousins: Jackie and Mike Parucha.

He was preceded in death by a special cousin, Stanley Lehman, who was raised in the home.

Bill was a 1960 graduate of Morrison Cove High School, the last class to graduate from there. He was also a graduate of IUP, where he received a 4 year degree in History. He was a member of Kappa Delta Rho.

Bill retired from Altoona School District in 1996 as faculty manager, after 32 years of service. He also worked at UPMC Behavior Health of the Alleghenies, retiring from there in 2022.

He was a member of Ward Ave. Presbyterian Church, Altoona.

Bill was an avid Pitt and Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He enjoyed watching sports; in fact he could often be found at the local high school sporting events, even after retirement. A favorite memory of Bill’s was working the PA State Track & Field Championships at Slippery Rock University. He also enjoyed playing cards, going to the beach with family, and his beloved dog, Sadie.
